Uniform Requirements of The 28th PVI
What you should know:
It is important to understand that the acquisition of a uniform and equipment can be costly. However, there is never any pressure to obtain everything immediately. We give all new members as long as they need to acquire their equipment. We suggest buying the best quality equipment you can afford. You can still have a great impression and not break the bank.
Clothing and leather goods should be obtained first. A basic uniform includes Civil War shoes (called brogans), sky blue wool trousers, dark blue wool “sack coat,” muslin shirt, wool socks, forage cap, and waist belt with “US” buckle.
Items to complete the uniform are a cartridge box with shoulder strap and eagle breast plate, cap pouch, bayonet and scabbard.
The single most important purchase is the musket. The 28th Pennsylvania uses either a 3-band Enfield, or a 3-band Springfield rifle-musket.
There are numerous other items that can be purchased to complete your impression. Please note that all items must conform to Union Army regulations and be appropriate to the period we are portraying. Spend your money wisely. The members of the regiment stand ready to assist you in obtaining your equipment and making purchases.
